The shower gel I’d always used. The skincare brand I knew worked for me. A particular hand cream. My favourite deodorant. The toiletries I’d casually throw into my shopping basket every week without ever wondering whether I’d be able to find them somewhere else.

Then I moved to America and discovered that some of those familiar British products were suddenly much harder to find — or simply weren’t quite the same.

America obviously has an enormous choice of beauty and personal care products, and I’ve discovered plenty of American brands that I now love.

But when you’ve grown up with certain products, there’s something comforting about being able to reach for the same familiar brands you’ve known for years.

And after more than a decade of living in the USA, I’ve definitely discovered that a few British favourites in the bathroom can make America feel a little more like home. 🇬🇧❤️🇺🇸

It’s funny how quickly everyday toiletries become part of your routine.

You don’t necessarily think of a particular shower gel or hand wash as being “British” when you live in Britain. It’s simply what you buy.

Then you move to America and suddenly you realise just how many familiar brands you’ve left behind.

Here are some of the British toiletries and personal-care favourites worth looking out for.

1. Radox

Radox is one of those brands that instantly makes me think of Britain.

There’s something about a Radox bath or shower product that feels incredibly familiar — particularly when you’re looking for a little bit of comfort after a long day.

The fragrances are also a big part of it.

Sometimes you don’t want to try something completely new. You want the familiar smell you’ve known for years.

And that’s exactly why products like Radox can become surprisingly important when you’re living abroad.

It’s not an essential in the traditional sense.

If you’ve spent years finding products that work for your skin, moving country doesn’t necessarily mean you want to start from scratch.

3. No7 Serums & Treatments

If there’s one British beauty brand that immediately comes to mind when I think about skincare, it’s No7.

For many British women, No7 is closely associated with Boots and has been part of their skincare routine for years. From everyday moisturisers and cleansers to serums, eye creams and targeted treatments, the range has become a familiar favourite for generations.

I’ve always thought there’s something particularly comforting about seeing that familiar No7 packaging again. It instantly makes me think of walking into Boots in the UK.

And if you’ve already found a No7 product that works well for your skin, being able to order it through Amazon USA means you don’t necessarily have to start searching for an American replacement.

The whole idea behind Simple — straightforward skincare without a lot of unnecessary fuss — is probably part of why so many Brits recognise it.

It’s also one of those brands that reminds me of British high-street shopping.

You could walk into Boots or another UK supermarket and see familiar Simple products sitting on the shelf.

John Frieda is one of those brands that feels instantly familiar to many Brits.

It’s a name you could find in British supermarkets, Boots and other high-street shops, with products designed around different hair types and concerns.

From shampoos and conditioners to styling products and treatments, the range covers a lot of everyday haircare.

And there’s something particularly useful about finding a familiar haircare product when you’re living abroad. Your hair has already had enough changes from moving country — it doesn’t necessarily need a completely new routine too! 😂

It’s funny how something as ordinary as a bar of soap can become nostalgic.

When you live abroad, you start to realise that nostalgia isn’t always about big memories.

Sometimes it’s a smell.

Sometimes it’s a product sitting on the edge of the bath.

Sometimes it’s simply seeing packaging that you haven’t seen for years.

7. British Hand Creams & Body Lotions

Hand cream is one of those products I never really thought about until I moved to Utah. The air here is SO much drier than what I was used to in the UK, and I’ve noticed a huge difference in my hands and skin. Especially during the colder months, my hands can become incredibly dry, and suddenly having a good hand cream nearby feels less like a little luxury and more like an everyday essential!

One of the British brands that belongs on this list is Neal’s Yard Remedies. With its distinctive blue bottles and jars, it’s a brand that feels instantly familiar to many Brits, particularly if you’ve shopped for natural skincare and body products in the UK.

Whether it’s a handbag essential, something you keep beside the kitchen sink or a little treat on your bedside table, a good hand cream is one of those everyday comforts that’s easy to take for granted.

8. British Deodorants & Everyday Personal Care

This might sound like a strange thing to include on a list of products Brits miss, but everyday personal-care products can be surprisingly nostalgic.

You get used to particular fragrances, textures and brands.

And while America has plenty of excellent alternatives, sometimes you don’t want an alternative.

You want the product you’ve been buying for years.

That’s one of the biggest themes I’ve noticed since moving from Britain to America:

Sometimes familiarity is the whole point.

One thing I would recommend when shopping for British skincare in America is to look for the specific product you’re already familiar with, rather than buying something simply because it says “British.”

If you’ve used a particular cleanser or moisturiser for years and your skin likes it, that’s worth something.

Moving countries is already a lot of change.

Your skincare routine doesn’t necessarily need to be another one.

I’ve realised that it’s rarely actually about the product itself.

It’s about what the product represents.

A bottle of shower gel can remind you of your childhood bathroom.

A particular skincare brand can remind you of shopping in Boots.

A familiar hand cream can remind you of your mum.

A certain fragrance can take you straight back to Britain.

That’s why I think expats sometimes underestimate how much these little products can matter.

When you move abroad, you don’t leave your memories behind.

And sometimes something as simple as a familiar bottle of shower gel sitting in your American bathroom can make you feel a little more connected to home.

🇺🇸 Are British Beauty Products Better Than American Ones?

Not necessarily.

And I don’t think that’s really the point.

America has some fantastic beauty and personal-care brands, and living here has introduced me to plenty of products I wouldn’t have discovered in Britain.

The difference is familiarity.

If you’ve used the same skincare product for ten years, you don’t necessarily want to spend hours looking for an American equivalent.

You know what you like.

You know what works for you.

And sometimes, living in America also introduces you to beauty products and brands you might not have come across in Britain.
