Hi, I’m Sophie — the person behind Life Across the Pond 🇬🇧➡️🇺🇸

I moved from the UK to the United States in 2010 after getting married, and since then I’ve lived in California, New York, and now Utah. Experiencing life in different parts of the country has given me a well-rounded view of what it’s really like to settle and build a life here.

Like many people, I expected the move to be fairly straightforward. In reality, there were countless small details and everyday challenges that no one really explains — from navigating new systems to figuring out how things actually work in day-to-day life.

Over time, I learned what makes the biggest difference: having clear, practical information and knowing what to focus on (and what not to stress about).

That’s why I created Life Across the Pond.

This site is designed to simplify the process for other Brits making the move — whether you’re just starting to plan or already living in the US.

Here, I share:

  • Step-by-step guidance for moving to the USA
  • Practical advice for settling in and navigating daily life
  • Insights on setting up finances, including banking and money transfers
  • The small comforts from home that make a big difference

Everything is based on real experience, with a focus on what’s actually useful — not just what sounds good in theory.

If you’re planning your move or adjusting to life in the US, I hope this helps make the transition a little easier.

Life Across the Pond combines personal experience with extensive research to help Brits navigate the practical realities of moving to and living in the United States. Topics covered include banking, healthcare, visas, money transfers, credit building, and everyday expat life.
